Can't argue with your analysis, but can only speak for the actions of 'my government' (at that time) who sent youngsters off to fight and die on 'my behalf'.
Perhaps in future problems, like these should be settled by locking those responsible in a room together and letting them sort it out among themselves - handbags at twenty paces, sort of thing.
BTW - you missed Ireland off your list - not to mention the definition of folk song!!!
