My dictionary says that one definition of 'townland' is an Irish term for 'a section of land, constituted as a township, as part of a parish.' That makes sense as something a rich man might own.

It sounds to me like the singer is singing 'cowlands,' but that may be a corruption. I prefer 'townlands.'
