"But if I should become a stranger you know that it would make me more than sad"

In performance that line scans better if you drop the word 'you' -
"But if I should become a stranger, know that it would make me more than sad"

That's the way I first heard the song, sung by Bill Crawford and Ed Vandendool under the name "Cravan Spirit" and still one of the sweetest renditions I've heard.

Bill & Ed used to operate the Caledonia Folk Club - not that Caledonia - this one is a small town on the Grand River in southern Ontario. It's also the first place I ever summoned up sufficient nerve to perform on stage. That's the Caledonia in my mind when I do the song. I tag it with "Caledonia, you're everything that I have".
