Yes.... (smile) Good point, gnu.

Anyone who thinks that war was actually fought over fears about Iraqi WMDs (whether or not there were any) probably still believes in the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy too...or would if their government and media told them to. ;-)

If the war was about WMDs (that were presumably moved to Syria), then Syria would soon have been invaded too in order to secure those WMDs. It was not about WMDs at all. Syria has been left alone so far, because they have cooperated with the USA on essential policy points. Saddam was not cooperating. He was selling Iraqi oil pegged to Euros, not US dollars. That was unacceptable to the American administration....but that was not something that the administration could use to convince the ordinary American public that Saddam was "a threat to the whole world"...which he most certainly was not. They needed something SCARY! So they came up with the WMD scare. They have been attempting to do the same in regards to Iran for some time now.

Hell, it worked once! ;-) Why not try it again?

Meanwhile, North Korea really has those nukes. Gosh! And there's been no war over it. Well, why would there be? If the North Koreans used a nuke it would only lead to their own annihilation by a massive American counterattack. It's simply a deterrent to those who might attack them, that's all. Likewise, an Iranian or Iraqi nuke could only have served as a deterrent to potential attackers, given that both Israel and the USA have nukes aplenty to totally outgun Iran and Iraq.

Smaller nations want nukes as a deterrent, not as a first strike weapon. It makes sense as a deterrent to an invader, it makes no sense as a first strike weapon...unless you are powerful enough not to fear the counterstroke of the one you attack.

If Saddam had already had 2 or 3 nukes and the means to deliver them to the target, would the USA have invaded Iraq? No. And that is the reason why small powers like Iraq and Iran want nukes. They want to deter an invasion of their land by a far greater military power.

And that's totally understandable from their point of view.
