Thread Name: Obit: Brunette Bombshell (Jane Russell, 1921-2011)

I saw her as Joanne in COMPANY in April or May of 1971, having driven 4 1/2 from State College, PA, to do so. (After the show I drove the 4 1/2 hours back.)

I'd come to see the show rather than her, of course, but in the role she seemed someone with whom Bobby, the show's main character, might actually wish to have an affair, as opposed to Elaine Stritch, the role's originator, who had all the sexual allure of a threshing machine.

One interesting point: she did not sing the lyric, "And Jesus Christ, is it fun," but rather substituted, "And my oh my, is it fun."

I thought it charming that a woman known as "wicked" wouldn't take the name of the Lord in vain...
