Mothers who had a small baby, and enough money to buy food for one, were encouraged, instead of buying food for themselves and breastfeeding their kids, to go hungry and feed their kids the formula.
I remember this from years ago too - and it was a deliberate campaign of misinformation i.e. the mothers were deliberately misinformed about their babies health needs in order to get them to buy the nestle alternative.
