Morgana, you're quite right. My Ivorian husband tells me that Malian and Burkinabe boys are sold or kidnapped to work as slaves on the coffee and cocoa farms in Cote d'Ivoire. Their lives are a misery and many die of fever, malnutrition etc. I didn't know this until I read your post, and my husband told me a bit more. I feel terribly guilty for all the chocolate I've eaten, ignorant of the sufferings of the young slaves to produce it. Apparently they're beaten savagely for not working hard enough or for trying to escape. They're locked up at night in tiny shacks, hardly able to get air to breathe.
