THE KOALA KAFE
©Eric Bogle January 2000

1. Down at the Kaola Kafe
They're not servin' milk-shakes any more.
The owners have gone and the shutters are drawn.
There's a faded note pinned to the door
That says, "We ran out of credit and cash.
We ran out of toil sweat and tears.
Then we ran out of dreams, so now it seems
All that's left is to run out of here."

CHORUS: The whole town is fadin', fadin' away
Since the music stopped playin' down at the Koala Kafe.

2. Outside the Koala Cafe
There's a big red and white "for sale" sign,
But nobody's buyin', for this town is dyin'.
It's only a matter of time.
The banks moved away months ago
When their profits started to fall,
And when the next term rolls round, the school's closin' down.
Without kids there's no future at all.

3. Inside the Koala Kafe,
It's silent empty and dim.
Dust lies thick on the shelves, the juke box as well.
No more Elvis, Madonna or Slim.
No songs driftin' along Main Street
On those long hot still summer nights,
No hoons drivin' about ,no kids just hangin' out.
Last to leave please turn out the lights.
