OVER ALL THE HILLS....

Over all the hills lies visible sleep
Keeping back the breaking into sky.
If it could be held, it would not hold me here
Diluting shadows, thickening light....
We want to master what only beyond our mastery gives --
Close around the moment, the moment found,
The moment lost and broken into sky.
My morning mug of coffee cradled in my hand
I feel my way along
the contours of emerging thought:
How the hand being grasped
cannot grasp itself
cannot itself grasp
itself cannot grasp
in a mist.
