I think part of it is just having been here for awhile. You become familiar with people's personalities (on-screen, at least) and you figure out that "X" might sound mad, but "X" coming from a certain person is usually tongue-in-cheek, because you've seen their posts in context over and over. Same as getting to know somebody face to face.
