I'd say they fell precisely between those two stools Paul Burke mentioned. Some of their stuff had a strong contemporary-jazz flavour, and that helped make them sound a bit intellectual for folkies. On the other hand it was famously impossible to decipher the lyrics when Bert was singing, and that should have won them folk brownie points in spades.
