Read Romeo Dallaire's story, The General and the Genocide. If you google that you will be taken to it. He and his UN troops didn't leave. He was a broken man when he returned to Canada. He'd defied both UN and Ottawa's orders--which cost him his career--to leave because he was protecting 20000 people. He told his bosses and they seemed not to care. He left the military and after some time he was appointed to Canada's Senate. Remarkable man. fyi
