It probably is a good idea to learn to sight-read. I just never got around to it. And much trad music is hard to represent exactly in standard notation. Learning the tunes by ear is probably the best way. Not the easiest way though. In any case, ABC notation is useful because it is relatively easily understood by computers and the above software will convert it to standard notation as well. You could have the tab displayed underneath if you want.
