My nephew, Dan, was VERY upset because on the day before my brother collapsed in the ER his father had sighed and said to him, "Dan, you'll be the death of me yet" as he checked over Dan' homework. It took quite a lot of work to convince him that it was just an expression and he wasn't guilty of anything.

Stuff like that can come back and haunt someone.
