The sanctions the US has placed on Cuba, have nothing to do with human rights. They're the result of extreme political pressure from Cuban refugees living in the U.S. Opposing sanctions against Cuba would mean political suicide in Florida, for either party. It's very similar to Israeli politicians who oppose Jewish settlements on the West Bank - their parties don't stay in power very long. Everyone knows the West Bank settlements must be abandoned to stabilize relationships between Israel and Palestine, and everyone knows the U.S. sanctions must be abandoned if we wish to have a peaceful relationship with Cuba. In each case, a small but politically powerful minority holds the rest of the world captive. An open, friendly relationship between the U.S. and Cuba would be beneficial to both countries. It's possible - if somebody would have the courage to stand up to the Cuban refugee voters in Florida.
