For discussion and to stimulate thought. If anyone has better figures/observations, please put them forward, (as my rough estimates are just that).
The locations are close. One location is a free market, third world economy, relying on tourism. The other is a communist, third world economy, relying on tourism (under US santions). Both have been influenced by US policies.
My understanding is a cuban earns approximately $10.00 to $20.00 US a month. Added to this would be free education, health care and subsidies on some necessities, like electricity, housing, transportation to work, and essential foods. My understanding is there are no taxes (for example, income tax). I do not believe there is a big difference in wages between professions. (However, I note that there is an underground economy).
I recently travelled to free market Dominican Republic. I was told by locals that a hotel worker (considered a good paying job) gets about $15.00 to $20.00 US a week (about $60.00 to $80.00 a month). There are few subsidies (similar to Cuba) in that country. My understanding is there is now an income tax in this country (though I am uncertain about the degree of an underground economy).
People seem healthy and happy in both countries. Housing in both countries seem similar. DM folks seem to have more access to consumer goods. Though there seems to be a growing difference between the rich and poor in DR. You are much safer at any time of the day in Cuba. It is interesting to see the big economic and social difference between DR and Haiti, who share the same Island.
