The 9/11 I remember is the one on September 11th 1973 when Augusto Pinochet overthrew a legally elected government in Chile, herded thousands of young people into Santiago Stadium where they were raped, tortured and massacred. Among the victims was Victor Jara, who was recognised as a protest singer by one of the guards, taken aside and had his hands mashed to a pulp with an axe, and then became one of the 'disappeared'.
Pinochet enjoyed the full support of the US and the co-operation of the CIA, and thanks to the efforts of British prime minister Margaret Thatcher (an ardent admirer), who used her influence to prevent his coming to trial for war crimes, was allowed to die peacefully in his bed, unlike his victims.
