There are several recordings of Heia Safari as sung by German forces in WW2. It was revived and popular with the Afrika Korps.

Across from a WW2 hospital where I was stationed near the end of the War (in Oklahoma), was a prison camp where Afrika Korps members who had been captured were sent. Why there, I don't know.
We would go there because the camp, run under supervision, allowed their cooks to select mess supplies liked by the inmates. Coffee was always on the back of the stoves, and the pastries were excellent. We traded cartons of cigarettes to them.

Of course, from those who spoke English we heard many stories and some songs, inchuding a marching version of Heia Safari (one is on youtube).
We used cigarettes, etc., to get them to do tedious tasks around the camp and a couple worked in our recreation area. They were bored, and some even took work on local farms, escorted by a guard.
One was a medical officer, we would give him one of our white uniforms and he would go on the wards with us and help with patients.

The cosy relationship fell apart when a switchboard operator wanted to go to town and put one of them at the switchboard. Late at night there was a call from some officer supervising the hospital, and the fellow, who had fallen asleep, woke and answered in German. I think there were some transfers as a result. Some of us were questioned, but we knew nothing.
