Do you know where he was born? I'm actually doing a Masters of Art Curatorship at the University of Sydney, so I plan to get in contact with Rena and Jill at Fisher Library. Ive been reading his essay intro to his translation of the Persian classic from Shiraz, the Akhlak-I-Jalaly of Fakir-Jany-Muhammad Asaad. He speaks of Islamic culture in relation to classical antiquity in ways that I think we in the West have only really started doing comparatively recently. Does anyone out there know where he was born, how he died so young? He must have been 26 when he was painted, around the same time as the above mentioned poem.. family story was that his wife, Jane Wilson was Eurasian. He had a son named William Frewen Thompson who became an inspector of schools in Sydney. Arriving in Melbourne in 1868. William Frewen Thompson may be buried in St Thomas' graveyard in North Sydney. Someone by that name is buried there. If anyone has any further info Id love to know!
