Henry Louis Gates Jr. explores Latin America's African roots in visits to six countries, beginning with Haiti and the Dominican Republic. He explains how Haiti's liberation from the French Empire became a double-edged sword. In the Dominican Republic, he examines how race has been socially constructed in a society where people have inter-married for centuries; and details the nation's troubled history with Haiti.
