Did you know that Elizabeth I banned football because it was so dangerous, people were getting killed? Mainly because it was an all village affair that lasted all day, with upwards of 50 people on each team!! Still, nice idea.....

And 'raining cats and dogs' comes from the same era. When it rained heavily, any dead animals lying around (mainly those that weren't eaten.....) were washed into the streets, thus making it look like it had been raining cats or dogs......
