Berndt Heinrich (he's the U. of Vt. professor who studies ravens, among other creatures) got curious about cluster flies. These critters will hatch out in mid-winter in a warm house in New England, then go to a window and die. He found some dormant flies and some that had hatched. He tasted them. The dormant flies were sweeter than the active flies. His presumption was that the sweetness was some sort of antifreeze. He left the subject for one of his grad students to explore. I doubt that I ever would have had the impulse to taste them, but I guess that's science. :-)
