1. I've a story sad to tell,
Which will illustrate quite well,
You must be very careful what you say;
For the language that we speak,
Often sounds a lot like Greek,
When words get twisted in a funny way.
Once a lady went insane,
Simply trying to take a train
To Duluth in Minnesota, so they say;
For as soon as she began
To inform the ticket man
What she wished, the conversation went this way:

CHORUS: "Two to Duluth," said the lady to the youth
Who was selling tickets for the train;
"Tum, tiddle tum," he replied and then was mum,
For he thought that she had water on the brain.
"Two to Duluth!" yelled the lady to the youth;
"Tiddle dumpty tiddle dum," she heard him shout.
"To Duluth," the lady cried,
"Tiddle dumpty," he replied,
While the train pulled out.

2. So they kept it up that way,
The remainder of the day,
Until the lady really lost her sense;
But to tell the bitter truth,
If you've ever seen Duluth,
You'll know she was insane when she commenced.
All the people standing by
Laughed until they though they'd die
At the chatter of the lady and the youth;
And for days and nights to come,
Ev'ry streetcar seemed to hum:
"Tiddle dumpty tiddle dum, two to Duluth."
