The original versions had "Curly Hetchins 1935", "Famous James '48" and "BSA Bantam 1952" before hitting on "Split Screen Morris Minor". And at first he handed the keys to Red Molly when he retired due to a bad back.
On a historical note, black rubber was more common than leather back then.
