Amateur musicians have been invited to take part in an online performance of The Archers theme tune, Barwick Green.

As part of BBC Radio 3's Light Fantastic festival, players can record their own part - from violins to percussion - and send them in. Contributed parts will be assembled into a complete performance of the work.

Radio 3 has prepared a special web page containing full instructions, the sheet music to download, and videos of the BBC Concert Orchestra performing the work - together with a conductor-only video to keep the individual players at home in time.

Light Fantastic is a 'festival of summer fun' celebrating the lighter side of orchestral music, including concerts, broadcasts and sing-a-long events.

Barwick Green is a 'maypole dance' from the suite My Native Heath by the Yorkshire composer Arthur Wood. When the founder of The Archers Godfrey Baseley selected the tune, he played it numerous times over a weekend and decided that it would bear repeated listening - hardly expecting it to be repeated over 60 years!

This is your chance to be part of Radio 3's Light Fantastic festival. We're inviting you to download the music to The Archers' theme tune for the instrument you play, then to record your part on your computer and send us the sound file. We'll mix the recordings into an online performance and you will be able to hear it on BBC Radio 3 in late June.

Below, you'll find videos of a demonstration performance by the BBC Concert Orchestra, an introduction from conductor Gavin Sutherland, and a conductor-only performance to guide you through your recording. You'll find full instructions below. Thank you for taking part, and have fun!

Here's What to Do

Step 1: Watch the video of the demonstration performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Gavin Sutherland.

Step 2: Watch the video of Gavin Sutherland explaining the process.

Step 3: Download your part from the list of pdfs opposite and print it out. Important: read the terms and conditions applying to the use of the music, and your recording of it, by referring to the Terms and Conditions box on this page.

Step 4: Watch Gavin Sutherland's conducting video to familiarise yourself with the process and the tempo. Gavin's introduction to the music comprises two counts of two - two audible ('ONE, TWO...') and two 'silent'.

Step 5: Set up your computer and recording equipment to capture a clear, direct sound from your instrument. You will need to use headphones to hear the conducting video sound while you take your cue from Gavin. Tune your instrument to the pitch of the demonstration recordings, and record your performance as you watch and listen to the video. Your recording should not include any audio from the conducting video, just the sound from your instrument.

Step 6: Repeat as often as required until you are satisfied with your recording.

Step 7: EITHER Upload your finished recording to a third-party uploading site which can generate a URL, and which will ideally allow us to download your file. Examples of uploading sites include SoundCloud, AudioBoo, Vimeo, YouTube - other uploading sites are available. (Video recordings will be accepted but are not necessary as we are primarily interested in the sound.) Then email the URL of your file to radio3lightfantastic@bbc.co.uk together with your name, location, and details of the part you have recorded. OR Email your file either directly to radio3lightfantastic@bbc.co.uk (headed 'Archers file') OR via a third-party file transmission site such as SendThisFile, Yousendit (other sites are available). Please include your name, location, and details of the part you have recorded.

The closing date for submissions is Monday 13 June. After the online performance has been mixed, it will be posted on the Light Fantastic web page and we will email the URL to you.
