Yes, actually Belafonte's version omits two verses. The original song ends with the narrator's neighbour crying out "Oh Lord, look a boo-boo dey!" and the children being sent away to the countryside for a bit :), which makes me think the father was being harassed and there was something more than teasing going on. Anyway, I think some of these "ugly girl' songs are tongue-in-cheek- who would marry someone they found ugly, just to get someone who'd be grateful to even get married?
