"I find it difficult to play fast technical pieces but I like to work on my tone"

I find that with a lot of Irish session playing of fast tunes, my tone, intonation, and playing in general gets quite ragged and undisciplined. When this happens, I like to play a lot of slow airs, O'Carolan tunes are nice, and slow waltzes. Then I can concentrate on the finer aspects of playing. It greatly improves my playing of the fast tunes. Also it helps to slow down those fast tunes so as to hear all the subtleties in the tunes.
