There are plenty of good modern country songs- it's just that you are only hearing the rubbish ones!
Only last night I was listening to AKUS (Alison Krauss and Union Station), Nickelcreek, and a brilliant young mando player called Sierra Hull. That was on the BBC in the UK. We do a couple of superbly written songs by Suzy Bogguss in the band.
What I am saying is that you should not forget the good old stuff, but that the good new country songs are way better melodically, lyrically and harmonically than anything ever done in the 'classic' days.
