I had problems when I started recording myself, but as time goes on I am getting less nervous and am able to get things right with fewer "takes".

I find if I don't get it right after the first two or three times, I usually get worse and worse. Then I find it best to pack up and try again some other time or record something else. It also helps to be comfortable with your material and be prepared to record at a slightly slower tempo on quick tunes as I find I am then less prone to mistakes.
