The English equivalent of rubbing alcohol is methylated spirits, or more expensive cleaning alcohols from a pharmacist.

The warnings about keeping alcohol off the 'varnish' are well founded. Good instruments are not varnished, but lacquered, and lacquer is resins dissolved in alcohol.
