Thread Name: Cyril Tawney - New CD: A Mayflower Garland
Subject: Cyril Tawney - New CD
Just received an email from Rosemary Tawney and thought it was worth posting on here for people who haven't seen it.
I have good news for those who have been hoping for Cyril's Argo LPs to become available on CD. Talking Elephant have just issued one of them. It's available from all the usual online sources, specialist folk music suppliers and at many festivals, as well as direct from Talking Elephant http://www.talkingelephant.co.uk/ and from me via Cyril's website. "A Mayflower Garland" available again after 30 years
"A collection of folk songs from Devon and Cornwall offered as a tribute on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower".
Cyril Tawney's 1970 album A Mayflower Garland is now on sale as a CD (Talking Elephant TSCD 176), having been unavailable for copyright reasons for over 30 years, as have many other gems from the Argo folk catalogue. The LP was produced to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers from Plymouth to America and consists of a selection of 12 Devon and Cornwall songs including three of Cyril's own (most notably a superb version of The Oggie Man), three-quarters of which have never before been issued on a Tawney CD. Other standout tracks are his definitive rendering of The Bell-ringing, Outward Bound, Sir Francis Drake and Rounding the Horn. There are five short extracts from contemporary historical documents read by Gary Watson, and Cyril is accompanied by Reg Hall (melodeon) and Tom Paley (banjo and plectrum guitar).
