The respirator should be one of the certified pest control types that look like an Army gas mask. They have a small canister of filters including activated charcoal. Might be nice to get a few extra filters when you buy a mask.

A particle mask will not be adequate for this job.

Wash all clothes with lots of soap and bleech immediatly after work is done, they take a long shower.

This work should be fairly easy for an experienced house remodeler.
