I don't like the term protest song. If it's used at all it should be restricted to the songs you use at an actual protest rally or a picket line or a barricade. And there are better terms for those in any case.

Songs which express attitudes and feelings about things happening in the world often get called protest songs. But really all songs do that. Some just happen to be about things that are upsetting, or express anger or regret. You judge them as songs. And you agree with them or you don't agree with them, but that's another matter.
