I'm a singer, and find that people invariably become quite if I sing a song (either unaccompanied or with my partner on an instrument); people will often shush each other. However! if he plays one of his beautiful solo melodic guitar pieces it's often just treated as 'wallpaper'. I suspect listeners are less likely to be a respectful audience to an instrumentalist. Don't now why.
