Janie, once the medical aspect is assessed and dealt with there are both vocal coaches and speech therapists who specialize in rehabilitating damaged voices, for both singing and speaking. Usually it includes retraining the muscles that have got into bad habits which can actually create things like polyps. Sometimes obvious or not so obvious lifestyle issues need to be addressed. Good places to find names (besides Mudcat :-)) include a music conservatory or a university music program.
