It was fairly common once to run vehicles on 'producer gas.' Usually between 1939 and 1945, in England. They began with something organic and dried it, then heated it (in the car) to produce gas. I've seen one running on chicken-shit. It was hard to start.
I've also seen an article on a guy who was using newspaper as fuel. Must have been the NotW.
