I think of my fiddle and violin as two very different instruments even though they're one and the same. Under my chin, it becomes a violin; over my arm it becomes a fiddle; when I play freely-improvised atonal sonatas in the neo-classical style (think Erich Zann in a melancholy fug) it is a violin; when I accompany myself on The Marla Hill Ducks it is a fiddle.

PS - I love 5-string banjos, but have certain problems with tenors, 6-string and uke types.
