Do you know how many evil forces are arrayed to prevent people from doing that? How many powerful programs prowl around inside the computer, kicking littler programs and severing their connections to speakers, to the synthesizer, to the printer?

Well certain programs like QuickTime and RealAudio are both notorious for grabbing every audio format they can think of and associating themselves with that format, if that's what you mean.
