Perhaps! But they are better for accomplishing the basic purpose, because the muscles can work better in squatting position than when sitting. One can combine both methods, however, by squatting atop a western style toilet rather than sitting down on it. This also allows a slightly elevated view if you want to look out the window. ;-)
