My daughter would know better than to put up with crap like that, because a) she's not stupid, and b) I have made sure she understands her rights. Any parent who doesn't prepare their kid to resist being taken advantage of is not doing their job properly.

Re: Old lady's burns--people have varying levels of sensitivity, and elderly people can be more delicate than younger ones. Also, one assumes she was wearing clothes at the time, and the hot coffee would have been trapped in her clothing and held against her skin.
