Other considerations:
Could the smaller NB spuds have fewer air spaces between them than the larger USA ones? Trapped air is a good insulator.
Many frdges freeze and cool items stored in different locations. Some of the differences are by design (not religion), others are not. Could your fridge in the basement be a cheaper or older variety, that would not freeze uniformly?
