I'm doing music part-time with a tolerable "day job" making up the difference. My music job involves both teaching guitar and performing. I could do it full-time but I'm trying to be careful and responsible about cash-flow.

It might work to have a job from which you're free to come and go as dictated by your music. Some employers are okay with this but most are not. It would provide a safety net though.
