LIZZIE is quite correct,Gordon Newton saved the festival, and due to him Joan Crump was later able to be artistic director, if gordon newton had not stepped in there would have been no festival to save.

Richard Bridge is also correct the fringe is just as important as the actual festival and would probably continue regardless of whether the main festival was on or not
