I met Peter Pilbeam recording items for Folk On 2 at the 1978 Edinburgh Folk Festival which I was there to review for The Guardian. My into-folk-from-my-early-influence nephew had recently been married to a fellow-kibbutznik from NY at their Golan Heights kibbutz, Machanayim, where he ran a folk club called Jacob's Ladder; and my wife Valerie, a photographer, had published a set of pix in Folk Review of the wedding-night concert, with such as Bobby Yelin from Chicago who was a visitor &c, under title of Israeli Kibbutz Folk Wedding. Peter Pilbeam had been struck by this feature, and invited me into his hotel room to record a piece about the occasion. The best place he found acoustically to use as the makeshift studio was the en-suite ~~ I wonder how many others reading this have been recorded for the BBC in a loo! I have, bugger·it!, lost my tape of the broadcast which went out some time in Autumn/Winter 1978. Don't suppose anyone has a recording of it anywhere? The Beeb, I gather, have wiped all the R2 tapes from that era.
