Burke, your mic needs to be plugged into the mic socket of your soundcard. The sound card should be located at the back of your system unit. I know that seems a little vague but I have seen a setup with the mic in on the monitor but the normal is as I described. If in doubt, check your user manual if you have one.

As for configuration, once you are in Hearme, there is a mic configuration program you can use (click on the link). This utility may say it has detected a problem with your existing config and offer to change it. As a general rule, let it make changes - it seems to be right in cases of weird setups like mine which use 2 sound cards in 1 PC. When you have done that, test yor set up. The program is crude and the sound it plays back is not that good but it should give you some idea of levels. Take no notice of the meter, it tells lies - just go by the volume of sound you hear played back.
