(I'm sorry, I can't do the blue clicky things)According the Grosse's "Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" (1783 IIRC), "Madame Abbess" was the nickname for a bawd in charge of a brothel - by extension the "nuns" were the ladies of said establishment.
