The "address" of a thread, e.g. http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=140471&messages=20
, includes the number of messages. This ensures that when you click on it, your browser will fetch it anew if a message has been added. Purple usually means that the browser has it in its cache - with the given number of messages.
However, our Mudelfs and Joeclones are constantly removing spam messages (thanks!). This changes the "address" of the thread as well, so your browser will display it blue when refreshing the list.
Whenever I visit Mudcat, I copy the "time stamp" of the newest thread to an all-purpose text file. I check the threads from the top of the list down to the first item predating my last visit.
