I had not heard about his singing problems. A real shame. I love his Gordon Lightfoot stuff. " Go My Way " and ' I'm Not saying" and "Home from the Forest" are some of my favorites. I think as for well known flatpickers he is the best technician. In my opinion he doesn't have Doc Watson's soul ( or pure enjoyment in what he's doing ) or Dan Crary's creativity, but I really enjoy a lot of his stuff. I really am sorry to find out about his voice. Wish him the best.
