A tradition dies as one thing (i.e. something people used to do but stopped doing because it no longer had any meaning to them) but is revived as another (i.e. something people do now out of an obligation to a new set of meanings which had nothing whatsoever to do with the original practise). Meaning in the first sense isn't the same as it is in the second; in the original the medium was the message, but revived I bet the participants can tell you exactly what the meaning is, even though that was something entirely unknown to the original particpants. Sir James Frazer has a lot to answer for!
