Uh, Little Hawk, maybe I'm missing your point here, but how is it a dumb question? Most people think of helmets in terms of impact protection, which seems pretty useless when you intend to crash and explode the plane you're flying. In fact, I've even seen the question with the phrase "crash helmets" in place of "helmets". Of course they weren't crash helmets, but the average Joe doesn't know details like that. The question arises from the appearance of absurdity and lack of specific knowledge, not from stupidity.
